Five people were killed and 13 people were injured on Tuesday morning in the subway station located in Brooklyn, New York.
Firefighters responded to smoke alarms in the 36th Street station in the Sunset Park neighborhood. There were also undetonated fire devices in the area, according to a New York City Fire Department spokesperson told the Times.
According to several sources from law enforcement who were briefed on the investigation preliminary evidence suggests that the suspect fled in an unidentified construction vest and gas mask.
A picture of the scene showed bloody people who were lying on the ground of the station as they were treated.
Trains that served the station were delayed due to the rush hour in the morning.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams was briefed about the incident, according an official spokesperson.
The New York Police Department has advised people to stay clear from the neighborhood, which has a reputation for bustling Chinatown, views of Statue of Liberty and Industry City where there are many businesses.
